Reference Recording of an Underrated Work

Beethoven’s C Major Mass should be better known than it is. Written in 1807 during his middle period, this work is at turns spiritual, heroic, contemplative, joyous, meditative, and exuberant. It is reminiscent of some of Mozart’s joyous masses in the same C Major key – the Coronation (K.317) and the Credo (K.257).

Gardiner, his Monteverdi Choir, and his early 19h century period band the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique are exquisite here. Large Scale choral works from the Baroque and Classical eras have long been a specialty of Gardiner’s. His reading of Mozart’s Great C Minor Mass on Philips and Bach’s B-Minor and Passions of Sts. Matthew and John are reference recordings. This disc is on the same level artistically and technically. It is a great performance of a great work that is captured in stunning aural detail.
