Dallas, TX (January 25, 2016) — Music Director Jaap van Zweden and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) announce the release of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3.
Van Zweden and the DSO were joined by Mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor, the Women of the Dallas Symphony Chorus (Joshua Habermann, Director) and the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas (Cynthia Nott, Director).
The recording is the seventh by Jaap van Zweden and the Dallas Symphony available on the DSO Live label. This recording is supported in part by the Nancy P. and John G. Penson Dallas Symphony Orchestra Recording Fund.
Mahler 3 was recorded live in concert May 21-23, 2015, in the Eugene McDermott Concert Hall of the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. The majestic symphony was a cornerstone of the inaugural Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Family SOLUNA International Music and Arts Festival which launched in May 2015.
Of the performance, Scott Cantrell of The Dallas Morning News said, “Jaap van Zweden commanded the piece both intellectually and viscerally, and the orchestra played stunningly… The finale was sheer magic.” Mike Greenberg of Classical Voice North America wrote, “Van Zweden proved to be a Mahlerian of the first water.”
