The madrigals on this CD are sublime pieces, the shifting emotions of the music in perfect alignment with the lovely poetry of Francesco Petraca. The polyphony is intricately constructed, the voices overlapping at almost breakneck speed.
This is not easy listening or background music but on careful listening the genious of de Rore becomes apparent. Exquisite mastery of construction and sonority.
The Hilliard Ensemble perform these difficult works with supreme skill – technical excellence allied to a true understanding of the compositions.
