Toccata Classics is proud to introduce this third volume in our series of CDs dedicated to the works of Sir Donald Tovey. His Symphony, Op. 32, and Cello Concerto, Op. 40, already released in this Toccata Classics survey of Tovey’s output, alerted modern listeners to a major voice in British music.
These two trios, lyrical and intense, written in 1895, at the start of Tovey’s career, present him in his first love: chamber music. The style is Brahmsian – with a twist of English folksong.
The release includes a comprehensive booklet containing Tovey’s own essay on the music, illustrated with many music examples, and with an introduction by Peter R. Shore and translations in both German and French.
The German press described the London Piano Trio as ‘simply world class’; at home Musician referred to the group as a ‘national treasure’.
