Anton Bruckner’s sole great work of chamber music is his String Quintet…Gerd Schaller has now prepared an orchestral version, the first for full orchestra. Gerd Schaller on his arrangement of Bruckner’s String Quintet: ‘What keeps drawing me back to the music of Anton Bruckner is hard to put into words – but I should at least try to do so: In the first place it is his highly individual, indeed singular manner of composition and over and above that it is the added spiritual dimension that he lends to his works. And Bruckner does more than write lovely melodies, he builds cathedrals of sound, impressive for their monumental size and at the same time for the way their contrapuntal fabric and filigree give them the inner detailing of chamber music. The other remarkable phenomenon is that his music has the effect of sounding archaic and modern at one and the same time. On the one hand one is reminded of a motet by Palestrina, on the other drawn by Bruckner’s sound world far into the future.’
