2 CDs. The third of DG’s series of seven Mozart operas conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin and initiated by Rolando Villaz¢n. It was recorded live in the stunning venue of Festspielhaus Baden Baden and features a star cast full of critically-acclaimed artists – including Diana Damrau, the reigning Konstanze of our time – with an extraordinary strong showing of Deutsche Grammophon artists: Anna Prohaska, Rolando Villaz¢n, Thomas Quasthoff and more.
For a while, it seemed as though the Nezet-Seguin/Villazon Mozart cycle had come screeching to a halt when they made the bizarre decision to follow up a spectacular Don Giovanni (although, to be honest, D’Arcangelo’s Don, while very well sung, is so unsuited to his colleagues that he’s kind of a blemish on the set) with Cosi fan tutte, of all operas. What people don’t like to admit is that, while Cosi contains some undeniably gorgeous music, it is inherently kind of a nasty piece, and the Baden Baden set has a sense across the board of “Well, we were going to have to do Cosi eventually anyway, so let’s just get this over with.” The fear became that this uninspired set would be the norm for the series and the Giovanni just a freak accident, and not vice versa.
I am pleased to announce that with this recording of Entfuhrung, not only is that not the case, but this is even a step up from Giovanni and gives promise for the future. Nezet-Seguin is obviously having a lot of fun conducting this score, bringing out the wonderful color, percussion, and wit in every number, and his occasional weakness with maintaining momentum over an entire act is not a problem with this singspiel. The Chamber Orchestra of Europe sounds incredibly rich, textured, yet appropriately light. It makes me excited for what these forces could do with Zauberflote!
