An Honourable Recording of the Brandenburg Concertos
Since the early years of the recordings of Gustav Leonhardt about 1962, I was really impressed by the natural and at the same time convincing interpretations of his Bach recordings. With his royal friend Nikolaus Harnoncourt of Vienna they invented a new way of interpretation of ancient music with (copies of) historic instruments and by studying old manuscripts on performance practices. They founded a school of apprentices perfecting the way Baroque music is interpreted in a elegant and passionate style. With help of the finest Belgian musicians, the bothers Kuyken, who were at the time already close friends, they made these monumental recordings of the Brandenburg Concertos of the all time genius Johann Sebastian Bach. I had the opportunity to attend some of their concerts and in my memory those concerts were way better than the recordings. Even so these recordings come close to the quality of the performance I heard a these events. So I can recommend without any hesitation you buying these fine pieces of musical finesse. There are many more fine interpretations of these concertos, but these will be in my view the summit of all.
Thanks!
