Mahlermallows – A Wonderful Set by Kubelik – a Great Conductor!

Just finished listening to this set – I’ve only recently come to Kubelik and I really have enjoyed most of what I’ve heard since he completely turned me around on the Brahms symphonies – his performance of those took music that, for me, was fine but that didn’t “get” to me, and made me love all four of those symphonies. It’s a wonderful set, straight through – I like the first Bernstein cycle a lot, but here there’s none of the hand-wringing, overemotionally that Bernstein loves (and which I have no problem with) – these have beauty and majesty, the musicality of these performances is beyond reproach. I especially like the first, sixth, seventh, and ninth in this set, but they’re all pretty wonderful anyway you slice it. I have to laugh at those who say he speed reads the sixth – obviously those who say that have never heard Kirill Kondrashin’s Melodiya performance – that performance is fifteen MINUTES shorter than most sixths – THAT’S fast – this is fine. Anyway, I’m sure we all look for different things in our Mahler symphonies, but this set is simply excellent, with terrific sound and Kubelik is just a wonderful purveyor of this music. A perfect helping of Mahlermallows.
