A Mahler cycle that bears repeating
Michael Gielen’s Mahler cycle, which began in the late 1980s and eventually migrated over to Hanssler Classics, is a resounding success even as it’s not all things to all Mahlerites. To paraphrase the words of one of Mahler’s Ruckert settings, “Liebst du um Schonheit,” if you love for overt emoting, then do not love Gielen; love Leonard Bernstein with his heart on his sleeve. If you love for Wunderhorn warmth, then do not love Gielen; love Rafael Kubelik with his echt-Bohemian naturalness. If you love for pyrotechnics, then do not love Gielen; love Georg Solti with his high-powered Chicago Symphony. But if you love for depth, structural integrity, and performances that reveal their secrets and strengths gradually instead of showing their hand immediately, then love Gielen and his masterfully thought-through, thoroughly idiomatic Mahler series. I might wish for higher voltage in the “Resurrection” Symphony and a larger chorus in the Eighth–and the CD layout is not the smoothest across the spin of 13 discs–but I know that I will be returning to this set again and again over the next several years.
Thanks a million.
Only listened to the final movement of Symphony 2 so far but it is very good with demonstration quality sound.
Thank you!
Thanks a lot for this amazing box set.
I’ve listened Sym #1 and Sym #5 and these performances are amazing.
Very promising for the rest of symphonies.
