Schuricht Redux.

Thought I’d set the ball rolling… I was surprised not to see a review! Here we have Schuricht’s Decca recordings – all of ’em – from the golden age of Decca ffrr recorded monophonic sound – Mozart’s “Haffner” and Schubert’s Eighth are early stereo recordings – complete with 1950s original artwork. Schuricht’s recordings of Schubert’s 8th – mercurial and mysterious, a la Furtwangler – with the VPO, Brahms’ violin concerto – glowing and Autumnal – VPO/Ferras and Beethoven’s 5th – brisk and energized – with the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra are masterful readings which are uncompromising, in the sense that Schuricht’s interpretative stamp is writ-large – this is no-nonsense music-making; art takes priority over commerce and image…

Mozart’s “Haffner” symphony, with the VPO, positively sparkles under Schuricht’s baton – effervescent and life-affirming. Schumann’s Second and Third “Rhenish” symphonies, with the Paris orchestra, have never sounded less contrived; Schuricht’s deft articulation and rhythmic precision, so buoyant and brimming with positivity, allows the music to flow freely, without recourse to inflated gestures/aggrandizement. The Wagner “Bleeding Chunks” don’t quite have Knappertsbusch’s “Sturm und Drang” Stygian heft, experienced on his Decca recordings of the same vintage, but Wagner isn’t all about rocks and boulders – Schuricht has more in common with Furtwangler… transcendence. All recordings in this box are an absolute joy and I’d advise immediate purchase, as this is a Limited Edition release.

Step back in time; fire-up those Quad valve amps, brush that stylus, spin the Garrard 301 and plug in the Quad ESL57s. Now, carefully lower the SME 3009 tonearm… You’ve never had it so good.
