“After Franz Schubert’s untimely death, none could be more distressing than that of Burgmüller.” This was the judgement of none other than Robert Schumann concerning the early death of Norbert Burgmüller (1810–1836). On the occasion of this composer’s 200th birthday in 2010 Frieder Bernius, together with the Stuttgarter Hofkapelle recorded both of Burgmüller’s symphonies to draw attention to this gifted composer. The music is characterized by an individual compositional style which, though it surely has it models, is not simply derived from them. With this recording Bernius concludes a series featuring Burgmüller’s instrumental music. For the astonishingly mature Piano Concerto he was able to engage as a soloist Tobias Koch, the renowned pianoforte specialist. In addition, with the four Entr’actes op. 17 and the Ouverture op. 5, the recording contains two of Burgmüller’s works which are definitely worth discovering. Thus, for the first time, the complete orchestral music of this extraordinary talent is now available on CD, performed on historical instruments.
