Gorgeous, under-appreciated music
If you enjoy the Brandenburg Concertos or Handel’s Concerto Grossos, then you will love these. (and BTW “Concerto is a perfectly decent English word whose plural is “Concertos”. “Concerti” is an affectation for snobs who want to parade their pseudo-sophistication.) I first heard these pieces on an original instrument recording by McGegan (see my review of that recording), and I hated it. When I got the Angerer, with lush-sounding modern instruments, I realized this is unspeakably beautiful music. The use of modern instruments did not obscure the transparency and detail of these lovely pieces. The conducting and playing are both gentle and spirited. I have about 250 classical CD’s in my collection, and I probably play these two more than any others.
Beautiful music beautifully done, and kindly made available.
