I couldn’t be more delighted!

Until recently, I had Glenn Gould’s first recording, Goldberg Variations (1955 Debu, but its speediness bothered me. Apparently, his later recording is much more relaxed, but his habit of humming and groaning during performance turns me off. On LP, I used to have a version on the harpsichord, which was beautiful, and I couldn’t help but be tempted by Trevor Pinnock’s Goldberg Vars/Italian Cto, but I felt that the piano would offer a cleaner sound. I was familiar with both András Schiff and Andrei Gavrilov; I settled on the latter. I couldn’t be more delighted! Parts still sound fast, when I think that it is supposed to induce slumber, but it is nearly twice as long as Gould’s rushed version. This is the one for me. It is a reissue of Goldberg Variations Bwv 988.
