The Evolution of the Keyboard or perhaps the Devolution! It’s a matter of debate, whether the harpsichord, the fortepiano, and the pianoforte represent the gradual ascent of a single instrument-species — something like H habilis, H erectus, H sappy sapiens — or whether the three aren’t separate critters entirely, each powerfully adapted to its musical environment. I strongly favor the latter interpretation in practice, but a stronger case for the Hegelian-Romantic history-as-progress interpretation could hardly be offered than this selection of works by seven composers of the 18th C whose careers intersected and who certainly knew of each other. This “Andreas Staier Edition” is not presented as a course in musical history; it’s packaged as a monument to the artistry of the performer, but along with the pleasure of hearing Staier perform sensitively on both harpsichord and piano, this 10-CD edition provides a survey of the greatest composers of the 18th C, minus just a few.

Not only does Andreas Staier perform each of them on precisely the sort of keyboard the composer would have had in mind, but he also plays each of them with profound insight in their aesthetic mindset.
