This disc of world premiere recordings marks the beginning of the first ever complete scholarly critical edition of Kuhnau’s cantatas. Conducted by Gregor Meyer, the artistic director of the Gewandhaus Chorus, the Edition is an ambitious project that will culminate in 2022 at the three hundredth anniversary of his death.
Introductory notes by renowned Bach scholar Dr. Michael Maul highlight the importance of this Edition as ‘an important musical facet of the transitional phase, so enthralling for genre history, between the sacred concerto of the seventeenth century and the late baroque sacred cantata… a facet of an importance that can hardly be overestimated.’
