The three symphonies here definitely reveal a substantial concerto composer whose stylistic influences and allegiances – Sibelius, Malcolm Arnold and Walton come easily to mind – never prevent him writing very individual music…there’s no doubt that Kenneth Woods and the BBC National orchestra of Wales really enjoy themselves performing such personable and communicative music. The recorded sound is excellent too.
[2nd Symphony] I found this final movement to be a well-considered musical statement…It’s a knock-out.The BBC National Orchestra of Wales plays the music with all of the reverence and precision any great orchestra would give to the standard repertoire. Conductor Kenneth Woods demonstrates great sensitivity and understanding of the music. He is a superb musician.
From its obliquely Mahlerian start, the Tenth Symphony (2016) proceeds as a tautly argued single movement that takes in passages of contrasting lyricism and incisiveness…The BBC National Orchestra of Wales leave nothing to be desired, Kenneth Woods taking time out from his estimable 21st Century Symphony Project…to deliver readings of audible conviction and insight.
