Agreed: The Best Beethoven Cycle Ever Recorded
This review won’t add much to the already correct review of “A Customer,” who aptly points out that this is, indeed, the best Beethoven symphony cycle out there. I own eight Beethoven symphony cycles, and this is the one I never tire of. I could write a small book on why Szell and the Cleveland orchestra do it best. It’s masterful beyond words, and I’m a little disturbed that it’s currently not available on Amazon, new or used, given that it really is the best cycle I’ve ever heard. This is the symphony cycle to have and enjoy – please, find it somewhere, and buy it.
And for those few of you, who, like me, love the 6th symphony most, you won’t be disappointed this time. Too often, great conductors, more interested in the bombast of the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th, overlook the 6th (why, I don’t know), and all we get is a rushed rendition of this majestic symphony. Szell and Cleveland really do perform each symphony in this set with a rare sense of passion and near-perfection – each piece is a work of art in this set.
Szells Beethoven was my introduction to the symphonies. I still love his third and the 8th is glorious. Thanks so much.
Thanks, Szell really shows a mastery of Beethoven’s symphonies.
Hi, Whatever. I have a LP version of this recordings, but in these days… it’s advisable the CD version. The eternal digital-analogic conflict. The LP version it sounds very very fine, but the worn is always present.
Thank you very much, Whatever.
Szell’s treatment of #9 is perhaps one of the best. It is a must have.
Many thanks for this – I had a vinyl set of these symphonies – in mono (mono LPs were presumably a little cheaper in those days).
You may want to change the description in CD 5 – to Symphony 9 :-)
oh sorry
