Rachmaninoff plays Rachmaninoff

This is clearly the most important recording of piano focused music in human history. Remember that Rach is not only a grand master pianist and composer, but he was also in the presence of other greats from the 19th century, such as Tchaichovsky, Liszt, et al.
The difference between these Rach recordings and those of virtuoso pianists who followed him or were his so-called peers is that he had the insight of composition which all of them lacked. For example, while he would of course infuse his personality into a Scriabin piece, he could also approach it only as a master composer could; additionally he studied under the same instructor as Scriabin, and they were lifelong friends.
That we are lucky enough to have such a recording set is unbelievably fortuitous. Anyone preferring fidelity to something as beautiful, historically important and powerful, should stick to Britney Spears CDs, where you can get all the fidelity you want and clearly care not for the content.
