Brilliant Budget Buy
Don’t you just love it when classic recordings get reissued on CD at a budget price?! Such is the case with this title in EMI’s “Encore” series featuring Weber Overtures by conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch leading the Philharmonia Orchestra in vintage stereo performances from 1958. During this period, Walter Legge’s musicians formed one of the world’s best groups and produced legendary recordings regardless of whether they were led by Karajan, Klemperer, Giulini, Cantelli, Silvestri or anyone else. (Heck, someone plucked off the street probably could have made a decent record with those players!) As expected, Sawallisch gracefully guides the Philharmonia through the seven Overtures — “Euryanthe,” “Ruler of the Spirits,” “Abu Hassan,” “Jubel,” the ever-popular “Der Freischutz,” “Preciosa” and “Oberon.” With classical budget lines beginning to inexplicably disappear (like Sony’s “Essential Classics” series — what’s up with that?!), I’m delighted that EMI continues to make great recordings available at such an inexpensive price through series such as “Gemini” and “Encore.”
superbe….thanks!
Thank you.
