This fifth release in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s ‘Horizon’ Series features an exciting mix of recently written works, beginning with ‘Hodie per nascitur’, an orchestration by James MacMillan of an anonymous 14th Century antiphon. Martyn Brabbins conducts the RCO and the Huelgas Ensemble is led by Paul van Nevel. House composer Detlev Glanert’s ‘Insomnium’, conducted by Markus Stenz, is a precursor to his opera ‘Solaris’ after the famous Stanislav Lem novel that also inspired film directors Andrei Tarkovsky and Steven Soderbergh. Klaas de Vries’s ‘Providence’ – inspired by Resnais’s 1977 movie – is about recollection, prediction, expectation and fulfillment. It is conducted by David Robertson. Susanna Mälkki conducts two world premieres, especially written for the round concert hall of the Westergasfabriek, a former gas factory: ‘Circle Map’ by Kaija Saariaho and ‘Antarctique’ by RCO house composer Richard Rijnvos.
