The Burleske is very well played while the 1962 Zarathustra is sublime.
Reiner’s 1962 Zarathustra was my first recording of this piece. To my 14-year-old ears, it was a mind-boggling example of the singular power and beauty of what 20th century music could be. Even though everybody else who knew this piece and Reiner’s way with it preferred the 1954, the earlier recording has always struck me as too driven and unruly. By 1962, Reiner took full advantage of the opportunity to surpass himself- according to people who knew him, he regarded this as the greatest challenge of all and delivered what might be the best performance now available. For a hard-won balance of poetry, intensity, and the kind of clarity that truly raises goose bumps, buy it. Meanwhile the Burleske is, as stated above, very well played but, to my ears, a rather superficial display piece.
