Legendary pianist Martha Argerich initiated a new musical Rendez-Vous end of June 2018 at the wonderful Laeiszhalle of Hamburg (DE). From Beethoven to Debussy, from Brahms to Prokofiev, Martha Argerich performed in duo, trio and in concerto with musical friends like Mischa Maisky, Nicholas Angelich and Stephen Kovacevich, and started new collaborations with artists such as Akiko Suwanai, Alisa Weilerstein, Guy Braunstein or Edgar Moreau. She also accompanied for the first-time world renowned baritone Thomas Hampson in Schumann’s Dichterliebe, a role she rarely endorsed during her career.
A unique musical celebration in which the piano legend performs new repertoire like Prokofiev’s Overture on Jewish Themes. A total of 7 well-filled CD Boxset that will also allow you to rediscover some of her war-horses such as Beethoven’s Triple or Shostakovich’s first concerto in new state of the art recordings.
Exit Lugano! Willkommen in Hamburg! Following the end of her festival in Lugano, Martha Argerich found refuge in Hamburg and a new musical effort, undertaken between friends, which was a new opportunity to foreground some talents from the new generation, such s the pianists Evgeni Bozhanov, Anton Gerzenberg, Akane Sakai and Kasparas Uinskas, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, clarinettist Pablo Barragán and violinist Alexandra Conunova.
This new edition of “Martha Argerich & Friends” brings us a Violin Sonata by Debussy with an uncharacteristic and thoroughly Gypsy treatment, (Hosszu-Legocky / Bozhanov), to which we could also add, in the same vein, the Cello Sonata with Maisky and his gorgeous glissandos. But there is also a beautiful Cinderella Suite by Prokofiev, arranged by Mikhail Pletnev (which the latter has previously recorded with Argerich for Deutsche Grammophon) shared by two couples, Alexander Mogilevsky and Akane Sakai first, and then Evgeni Bozhanov with Kasparas Uinskas, the latter two being more inventive and exciting thanks to their respective madnesses. The lion is unleashed in Shostakovich’s First Concerto, with some very marked contrasts, before we move onto a curiosity: a transcription of Mendelssohn for flute, cello and piano! A strange effect.
No-one would want to miss the Dichterliebe by Schumann (the 1840 version) by Martha Argerich and Thomas Hampson, with a declamatory engagement which is not without its surprises; neither would they pass up Lecuona’s Danzas Cubanas, performed by the venerable Mauricio Vallina, who decided to turn his piano into a theatre. Disc 7 opens on a version with narration (and orchestra) of Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns.
Clearly, in Hamburg, Martha Argerich doesn’t have access to acoustics that equal those in Lugano (Auditorio Stelio Molo), which are among the best in the world for piano and chamber music. One need only compare the radiant 2016 version of Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune by Debussy with the one presented here (track 5). Let us hope that the next edition can be recorded in the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle.
