This is the latest Mahler recording from the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Roger Norrington. This recording marks the crowning achievement of Norrington’s exploration of the Romantic Symphony masterpieces.
A conductor long associated with the movement for historically informed performance practice, Roger Norrington applies his ideas to Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 in D major. Leading the SWR Symphony Orchestra of Stuttgart, the orchestra he usually records with on Haenssler recordings, Norrington delivers a performance that is notable for its lack of “permanent vibrato” in the strings, a pure tone the conductor says was common in the 19th century and expected of European orchestras up through Mahler’s time. This is a live recording, dating from 2008.
