Mieczysław karłowicz (1876-1909) was born in Lithuania and educated in Berlin and Warsaw. He was a solitary composer, not really finding himself ‘well in’ with the group of composers of his time, which was the period of modernism. Among them, and right next to Karol Szymanowski, he was with no doubt the most outstanding one. The Violin Concerto (1902) which is in traditional form, has Tchaikovsky’s concerto as patron. It is a truly visionary piece, filled with Slavonic lyricism and melodiousness.
