This CD documents a ten-year productive friendship between a composer and a performer. In 2004 the American composer Michael Alec Rose – born in 1959 in Philadelphia and a faculty member of the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University – met the English violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved, since when he has written fourteen works for Sheppard Skærved and his colleagues. Some of the works commemorate London landmarks: An Arch Never Sleeps and Everything under the Sun: Four Seasons for Two Violins were written for Wilton’s Music Hall near the Tower of London and All’Arme for solo horn was composed for performance from the top of The Monument in the City. Rose’s music is marked by striking emotional directness, balancing warm lyricism and mordant wit.
