Giovanni Bassano (ca. 1558-ca. 1617) is often attached to the large family of musicians and harpsichord makers of the same name but is not, however, formally affirmed. An Italian composer of the Venetian school, he was one of the major players in the development of the instrumental ensemble of the St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice.
Regarded at the time as the best cornet of the Seicento, his works include not only musical and vocal works, but also a book on how to embellish and play the music of his time.
To date, we have no recordings of his Ricercar, proposed in his book from 1585. This project takes up the challenge to put them on record. To vary the instrumentation and demonstrate that these pieces were also thoughts for other sounds, some have interpreted the violin, flute, traverso as well as Bassanello, an instrument invented by Bassano himself which reflects both the cornetto and bassoon.
The program also includes nine French songs transcribed for a panel of one or two soloists accompanied by continuo consisting of a lute, harp and keyboard.
