Cyprien Katsaris (piano)
A refreshing change
This is a lovely CD from a pianist who believes in the beauty of music, rather than showing off his virtuosity. He has collected highly unfashionable and outdated piano transcriptions of some of the great orchestral and operatics works and some lieder too, and provided simple, beautiful renditions of these. His playing of the slow movement from Mahler’s 5th symphony is one of the most beautiful things i have heard in years – and i have to resist playing it too often for fear of wearing it out. Few CDs have given me as much pleasure in recent years. Katsaris is a real artist whose deep love for the spiritual qualities of the music shines quietly through.
