The career of José Carreras will surely go down in opera history as one of the greats. This Philips retrospective, covering the years 1976-1992, includes some of the brightest performances he has recorded.
The Spanish singer is best known for his work as a lyric tenor, but as his voice continued to develop, Carreras successfully made the shift to more substantial roles. Rather than presenting this development chronologically, the producers have organized Carreras’ work by composer. The first CD is dedicated to his work with the great operas while the second primarily features his lyric performances.
It is in his work with the English Chamber Orchestra that Carreras shines brightest. Virtually all of the second CD has been taken from their work together between 1978 and 1984.
