In Italy, 19th century opera composers seldom dedicate themselves to sacred music. The young Alfredo Catalani composed on 1872 this Mass. It’s a unique piece, both for the pervasive relation to Italian tastes and habits of the time and for the short life of the artist. The work is in four voices (soprano, contralto, tenor and bass), a mixed chorus and a classical orchestra. Following tradition, he set to music the ordinary parts.
