Even when Dresden lay in ruins after the Second World War, Bruckner was performed. Between 1945 and 1950, the young GMD Joseph Keilberth conducted what may have been the first complete cycle of all “original” Bruckner symphonies. 1946 brought the first performance of the Third Symphony in its original version: late in the day, the Staatskapelle gained the status of a Bruckner premiere orchestra (illustrated by the 2008 recording of this version with Yannick Nézet-Séguin: Edition Staatskapelle Dresden, Volume 39). The Bruckner tradition is alive today within the Staatskapelle Dresden. It is documented in recent times by the now legendary complete recording of Bruckner’s symphonies under Eugen Jochum between 1975 and 1980, concerts and recordings under Giuseppe Sinopoli and Bernard Haitink and the current Bruckner cycle under Principal Conductor Christian Thielemann.
