In 1950, International Bach Competition took place. Each participant played from memory one prelude and fugue from WTC – on his own choice. But when Tatiana Nikolayeva has been called, she has proposed the jury to choose any prelude and fugue from WTC. She held the complete WTC in her memory! She won the first prize. And her performance has so impressed Dmitri Shostakovich (one member of jury) that he began to write his own set of 24 preludes and fugues. Tatiana Nikolayeva was the first performer of preludes and fugues by Shostakovich.
