Overall, it is a very good collection, well played and recorded, for a quite low price. Highly recommended.
This is a great collection from the Freiburger Barockorchester, with Hengelbrock and von der Goltz as the main soloist, spanning a variety of german, italian and english baroque composers. Although it was recorded in the early 90s, it still holds up compared to recent recording. The sound quality is good, without much reverberation but without sounding dry, and the interpretation is generally very good, if not brillant. These musician have understood how to play baroque music: the intonation and attacks are precise and incisive, without being overly aggressive, but they also show grace and lyricism when needed.
The pieces that stroke me the most during the listening, there were a concerto for violin by Telemann (which showed me that Telemann could be as energetic as other composers from the period), the Abdelazer and Dioclesian suites by Purcell (rarely have I heard Purcell played that way!), and some sonatas by Biber. Another very good point is that there are pieces by composers that are not as often recorded, such as Zelenka, Schmelzer, or Zavateri.
Overall, it is a very good collection, well played and recorded, for a quite low price. Highly recommended.
Well disciplined performances
If you are looking for an inexpensive collection of both well known and lesser lights of the Baroque being performed by a very well disciplined and talented group, then this is for you. My favorite is the CPE Bach, but there are many other highlights.
