Great Music From The Dawn of Deutsche Grammophon’s Magnetic Tape Era
Great music from the dawn of Deutsche Grammophon’s magnetic tape era in Germany. While Fritz Reiner in Chicago, Charles Munch in Boston, and other great conductors were performing and recording in the U.S.A. Europe also had it’s great conductors like the often frenzied Igor Markevitch, the passionate Ferenc Fricsay, Fritz Lehmann, Otmar Suitner, and others. Once one gets past the mono sound of most of these recordings which is generally pretty good, the music starts to come through and because it’s mono it’s almost like you are hearing it for the first time all over again except through vellum which gives them a nostalgic and melancholic hue. It’s like being transported back in time to 1950’s era. I started to get addicted to them and finished listening to all 10 CDs in a few days. Of particular note is the passionate performance give by Ferenc Fricsay and his RIAS Symphony Orchestra of Tchikovsky’s 4th symphony and Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suites with Suitner as well as other that you will discover. Each individual CD comes with a short paragraph about some of the works. Also, each CD has a major work released for the very first time on CD. Oh and one more interesting note, when you remove the CD from the clear CD tray a picture of the original hand written catalog recording card is shown as well as a picture of the conductor. This set is highly recommended if you can find it.
