A Great and Underappreciated Pianist

This is another one of EMI’s blockbuster bargain anthologies. Samson Francois was one of the greatest French pianists of his generation. Though underappreciated (at least today), and sometimes misunderstood as something of a facile dilettante, he was in fact a tremendous artist with a huge repertoire, a scintillating touch, and a highly distinctive interpretive profile. He was a pianist not afraid to take risks–technically and interpretively; his renditions of standard repertoire may sometimes be unconventional, but they are always instantly recognizable. In these respects his pianism resembles another keyboard giant at work in France during the Fifties and Sixties–namely Georges Cziffra. Like Cziffra, Francois remains a controversial pinist, and his Chopin, in particular, may strike some listeners as idiosyncratic. At his best, however–which he was usually in French repertoire and more intermittently in other composers–he has rarely been surpassed for poise, precision and poetry. Most of the contents of this EMI box have been previously reissued, and I have acquired them in one incarnation or another. They constitute some of the most delightful piano recordings in my collection; I keep coming back to them, enriched and sometimes provoked to reconsider long-standing expectations about how certain repertoire should be played.
