Janssen’s Great Wolfram and Berger’s lovely Shepherd
Very much worth hearing are these excerpts preserved from the 1930 Bayreuth cast, cond. by the distinguished K. Elmendorff. Toscanini had done Tannhauser at Bayreuth the previous year, and had rehearsed with parts of this cast and the orchestra. And the cast is well worth hearing: Pilinszky as Tannhauser, then Mueller and Jost-Arden, and Andresen and a young Janssen, and the absolutely delightful Erna Berger as the Shepherd.
Whatever, thank you ver much again. I just download the Barenboim and Sawallisch version, and this of Leinsdorf is maybe the most interesting. We’ll see.
Thank you!
For Flag’s sake, no worries. For minors’, quote: “Recording of a performance at the MET (16 December 1939). «Everything whuch survives of the principals is present but to accommodate the performance on two discs a few small cuts elsewhere were unavoidable».”

Thank you again, Whatever.
