Symphony No. 8 in C minor (“Apocalyptic”; “The German Michel”), WAB 108 (various versions)
Composed by Anton Bruckner
Performed by Hamburg North German Radio Symphony Orchestra
Conducted by Gunter Wand
Wand’s Famous Lubeck Performance of Bruckner 8.
This famous performance of Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony by Günter Wand conducting the NDR Orchestra of Hamburg was recorded live in 1987 in the Lubeck Cathedral. It is generally conceded to be the greatest of Wand’s four recordings of this masterpiece, and given to the resonance of the recording site too, it may well just better than any other performance PERIOD. It’s the best I’ve heard, but I’m no Bruckner expert, and they are legion. For me it is undeniably a deeply moving experience, and I have no hesitation in recommending it. I do however hesitate to recommend it at this price! For reasons beyond me, there are multiple discs of this around, some with Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony attached as well. So if by any weird chance you haven’t already acquired it, shop around for a better deal, but do hear it. Pardon the cliché, but It’s awesome!
Thank you for this great Bruckner
