When the name Johann Nikolaus Forkel (1749-1818) is mentioned today, the first thing that comes to mind is his authorship of the first biography of Johann Sebastian Bach. Beyond this, musicologists regard him as the “founder of advanced modern musicology”, which, according to a widespread prejudice, is associated with a lack of creativity. But this is far from true.
Forkel, who was a professor in Göttingen for many years, has left us with a splendid body of work, including the four piano concertos recorded here for the first time. Although they follow classical lines, there are many moments of enchanting music, and the slow movements are expressive and poignant. Tobias Koch, one of the most outstanding specialists for historical keyboard instruments, and the Kölner Akademie under Michael Alexander Willens.
