An incredible set of the Mahler symphonies. These days it is difficult to gather the complete Inbal set (his first go around) individually from the Denon label. Here they all are including the Cooke completion of the Tenth as well as Das Lied von der Erde. None of the performances is less than excellent with a particularly fine 5 and a powerful, well sung 8. There is plenty of emotion here, perhaps not quite as extreme as Bernstein, but far from clinical or boring. The Frankfurt orchestra plays well throughout. The sonics are good although I did find myself having to notch up the volume a tad. This is my thirtieth complete set of Mahler symphonies and overall ranks just behind the three Bernstein sets. For me the DG DVD set will always be number one, but I will be returning to Inbal more frequently than most of the others including Boulez, Rattle and even Abbado.
