Cellist Elinor Frey has long been involved in researching, recording and editing the remarkable cello music of Giuseppe Clemente Dall’Abaco (1710-1805).

On her new CD with works by the composer, the art of variation is explored in two cello trios and three cello sonatas. In each sonata, the final movements have a theme which is followed by a series of variations. These give the composer or performer space to develop the piece further by developing imaginative and virtuosic new figures in the solo cello part.

Elinor Frey is a leading Canadian-American cellist, gambist, and researcher. Equally at home on stage, in the classroom, or in a library, Frey has been awarded Quebec’s Opus Prize for “Performer of the Year” (2021) and is a Visiting Fellow in Music (2020-2023) at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University.

Elinor is also artistic director of Accademia de’ Dissonanti, an organisation for performance and research, and she has performed throughout the Americas and in Europe in recital and with numerous chamber ensembles and orchestras.
