Founded in 1994, the Verbier Festival is a high-profile musical event held each summer in the resort town of Verbier, Switzerland. The international festival has featured energetic performances by many celebrated musicians, such as Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin, Bryn Terfel, Yuja Wang, Mikhail Pletnev, Malena Ernman, and Daniil Trifonov, among many other guest artists. This four-CD set from Deutsche Grammophon presents concertos, chamber works, and operatic and vocal music, bristling with the excitement of live performance. Presented in a hardcover booklet, the package offers complete performances of works by Tchaikovsky, Berio, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Tsfasman, Brahms, and Dvorák, as well as the final act of Die Walküre by Wagner, so much of the music will be familiar to mainstream audiences, if not all casual classical listeners. Of course, the key to enjoying this set is a desire to hear the live interactions of the musicians with each other and the Verbier Festival Orchestra and the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, conducted by maestros Valery Gergiev, Gustavo Dudamel, Kurt Masur, Gábor Tákacs-Nagy, and Kent Nagano, which added considerable excitement to the concerts. Deutsche Grammophon’s recorded sound is superb throughout these recordings, despite the variables of time and venue, though Takács-Nagy’s humming in the Beethoven is distracting.

This limited 4-CD edition of previously unreleased live recordings from the Verbier Festival celebrates the festival’s 25th anniversary.

Featuring admired DG artists as Martha Argerich, Yevgeny Kissin, Mikhail Pletnev, Bryn Terfel, Daniil Trifonov, Yuja Wang and conductors Valery Gergiev, Gustavo Dudamel, Kent Nagano and Kurt Masur in performances of both core classics and lesser-known works from the orchestral, concert, chamber and operatic repertoires.

The beautiful hardcover box includes a 32 page booklet (French, English and German) with a note by Julian Sykes and a Foreword by the Festival’s founder, musical and executive director, Martin T:son Engström.
