The fame of the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Music Competition extends quite beyond the limits of Europe. Founded in 1951 and at first restricted to the violin and the piano, it has seen pass through it some of the greatest instrumentalists of the twentieth century: Leonid Kogan, Berl Senovsky, Leon Fleisher, Philippe Hirshhorn, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Lazar Berman, Gidon Kremer, Valery Afanassiev, Yusuko Horigome, Vadim Repin, etc. In 1988, conscious of growing public keenness for the voice, be it opera, song or oratorio, the organisers decided to add the voice to the two other disciplines. The Polish singer Aga Winska was the winner of the first vocal session, in 1988 ; four years later, the French baritone Thierry Félix was the winner. 1996 was marked by the victory of another baritone, American this time, gifted with a strong personality: Stephen Salters. This record presents extracts of the performances of six laureates, and includes five other wonderful singers, some of whom are already enjoying an international career.
