Martha Argerich’s rise to international fame began in 1965 when she won the International Chopin Piano Competition aged 24. Her American debut and first recordings followed in the same year. Early in her career she often performed as a recitalist and a handful of recordings remain as a testament. This makes the Mozart solo piano sonatas on this CD, dating back over half a century, of particular interest. As is the Mozart piano concerto no.21, which she has never recorded commercially. Martha Argerich has come to be universally recognised as being among the preeminent pianists of all time.
