Conductor: Leonard Bernstein

Bernstein Haydn bonanza box finally here

Bernstein went back yearly, practically, to continue with his Haydn project the entire time he was in New York. In retrospect these Haydn performances are one of his greatest New York Philharmonic legacies right up there with his Mahler cycle, but perhaps even more consistently excellent. He demonstrates the ‘Classical’ YIN to the more frequently remarked upon ‘Romantic’ YANG so well served in his Mahler. The performances of the six Paris Symphonies, Sym. 88, 12 London Symphonies, 4 Masses, and the Creation, 12 disks full in all, were put together from the late fifties to the late seventies at a jumble of five recording venues that turn out to have amazing consistency in production values through all the changes, and the orchestra here proves that it was one of the world’s top ensemble throughout that time.
But Bernstein is the one with the flair for large band Haydn, and provides a consistently satisfying orchestral rendering, that is in no way eclipsed by any of the other modern orchestra projects. Tempos are rarely contentious and he takes the fast bits with breathtaking orchestral/organizational brilliance.Minuets are taken spaciously, but nothing ever drags. Solos are all ravishing One could pick and find individual performances elsewhere to outdo these here and there, but Lennie nails these works with his crisp yet sumptuous approach, and his London Symphonies easily complete with the often praised Colin Davis set with the Concertgebouw, but the inclusion of the 4 Masses [the final one recorded in London with LSO forces] and The Creation, which have consistently been admired, makes this box unmissable for all Haydn fans. These performances have never all appeared together like this or sounded as well.

  1. No scandal please if I salivate too much on this, but bernstein’s unchainable impudence & n.y.c. mesmerized adaptability is just what this kind of german needs to sound so alive and… so much as a contemporary
    thank you very much
