it’s hard to imagine more committed performances than these both from the orchestra (wind and horns impressing in their many solos) and Prégardien, who colours and phrases Rihm’s sustained, darkly tortuous lines with consummate eloquence.

Prégardien has a wonderfully light, pure sound that can be turned to any expressive purpose…He touches the sublime in [Urlicht] and the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen…The orchestra is superly recorded by the CPO engineers, sounding close to the singer yet not boxed in. This is a particular asset in the Rihm, which is more densely scored.

Prégardien sings both composers with meticulous attention. He’s wonderful at characterising the Mahler songs without ever making them twee; the shape of each phrase and the colours in it are there for a reason.
